Rongai

The Rongai Route is the only path that approaches Kilimanjaro from the North. This trek offers a completely different landscape from the other routes. The trail passes through forest and farmlands that provides magnificent views throughout, with possibilities of spotting the wildlife.

It The Rongai Route is a great alternative for those who do not feel comfortable of dealing with busy huts on the Marangu Route. The biggest advantage of Rongai Route is that is the quietest route of all and that is for a reason. It is the second worst of all the six routes because the topography on this trail doesn’t allow the “climb high, sleep low” principle that is so imperative for a successful expedition. The path coils for first three days across the lower slopes and the gentle gradient. Then it detours via Mawenzi (seven-days trek), allowing you to explore this extraordinary second summit area more fully than on any other route. It then makes the final summit push via the Marangu Route. Descent form the mountain is along the Marangu Route. The trek can be completed in six-days. However, we strongly recommend taking this route in seven-days, which will allow you an extra day for a better acclimatization.

How to get to Moshi

Moshi town is situated on the lower slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro. The best way to get to Moshi is flying directly to Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), located approximately 30 minutes from the town. KLM. Kenya Airwas, Condor and Ethiopian Airlines provide service to this airport. Flying to Dar es Salaam (DAR) is another option from where you will have two ways to get to Moshi.

By 7-8 hour bus ride, this costs $50 USD for a single trip or by an airplane. The flight is about one hour long. We can assist you with hotel bookings and transportation from or to Dar es Salaam. Flying into Nairobi, Kenya (NBO) will be significantly less expensive than Kilimanjaro, however you will need a Kenyan transit visa (available upon arrival) and a seven hour bus ride to Moshi (about $40 USD for a single trip). The road is not the most comfortable, due to ongoing construction work. At the Tanzanian border all passengers have to disembark and go through immigration. It is a good idea to bring your own snack and refreshments.
