Umbwe

The Umbwe Route is the most direct and strenuous ascent route. Climbing stiffly through the thick forest on the southern slopes of the mountain, it rapidly gains height and affords you little time to acclimatize properly. The summit push is often made via the Barafu Route, but is also done via the Western Breach. Regardless, the descent is via the Mweka Route.

For those who are fit and fully acclimatize (coming from Mount Meru), Umbwe route is probably the most dramatic way to climb Kilimanjaro and experience many of its fines vistas. It must not be underestimated, since it poses a very real challenge. The traffic on this route is very low; the chances of success are also low. We offer this route at a minimum of six days but recommend a seven day ascent. We ask every climber to consider carefully before deciding on this route since there is minimal time to acclimatize and therefore a high chance of altitude sickness.
