Which route is right for your epic adventure?
Mount Kilimanjaro offers several routes to the summit, but in this article, we are covering the Lemosho and Machame routes. Both are scenic, challenging, and highly successful, but they each have distinct advantages that can affect your experience.
So, how do you choose between them? Let’s break it down.
Route Overview
Lemosho Route
- Duration: 8 days
- Length: ~43 miles (70 km)
- Crowds: Less crowded at the start
- Success Rate: Over 90%
- Best For: First-time trekkers, photographers, and those seeking a quieter, longer journey
The Lemosho Route begins on the remote western side of the mountain, taking you through lush rainforest, across the scenic Shira Plateau, and eventually joining the Machame Route near Lava Tower. It offers a longer acclimatization period, which increases your odds of a successful summit.
Machame Route
- Duration: 7 days
- Length: ~38 miles (61 km)
- Crowds: Busier, especially in high season
- Success Rate: Around 70%
- Best For: Adventurers on a tighter schedule who still want a beautiful and challenging trek
Known as the “Whiskey Route,” Machame is the most popular route for good reason—it’s scenic, exciting, and well-balanced. You’ll climb high and sleep low, which helps with acclimatization. It’s a great option if you’re in good shape and want to maximize your experience in a shorter time.
