How to Stay Warm at the Summit of Kilimanjaro

Reaching the summit of Kilimanjaro is one of the most challenging and rewarding experiences of the climb, but what many climbers worry about most is staying warm. The trek to Uhuru Peak, the highest point, starts after nights spent in tents, and the final push involves a grueling 4,000-foot ascent. With the final push taking between 6 to 8 hours, you’ll be moving through freezing, arctic-like conditions with strong winds.

Climbers always mention the intense cold as one of their biggest challenges on summit night. Kilimanjaro stands at an impressive 19,341 feet, with snow and glaciers covering the peak year-round. Temperatures can drop far below freezing, making it essential to know how to keep warm on your way to the top.

What to Wear on Summit Night

When it comes to your summit attempt, you’ll be layering up more than at any other point during the climb. Your guides will give you detailed advice the night before about what to wear based on the weather forecast. This is your chance to ask questions to ensure you’re fully prepared.

After the Summit: The Descent

As soon as the sun rises, the temperature will start to rise quickly. You’ll find yourself needing to shed layers to stay comfortable. Be ready to take off your heavy insulated layers and switch to lighter gear as you descend. Even though it feels like you’re almost done after reaching the summit, there’s still a significant descent to go—roughly 10,000 feet of elevation drop.

Descending from the summit

Hydrate frequently, snack often, and take care of your skin with sunscreen. The descent can be extremely tiring, and trekking poles can help ease the strain on your legs after the taxing summit push.

Staying warm on Kilimanjaro is all about preparation, layering, and adjusting to the conditions as you go. With the right gear and guidance from your experienced team, you’ll be ready to face the challenge of Kilimanjaro’s summit and come back with stories of triumph, not frostbite!
