Kilimanjaro Review: Oofos Recovery Slide

While sturdy hiking boots are essential for tackling the challenging Kilimanjaro trails, a pair of comfortable, lightweight sandals can be a game-changer for relaxing around camp. After a long day of trekking, slipping into sandals gives your feet a break from the weight and restriction of boots, allowing them to breathe and recover. In this review, we’ll explore the Oofos Recovery Sandals that offer comfort, durability, and practicality, making them perfect companions for downtime at Kilimanjaro’s campsites. Whether you’re slipping them on for quick bathroom trips or just letting your feet relax after a full day on the trail, the right pair of sandals can be an invaluable part of your mountain gear.

Recovery footwear is a relative newcomer to the mainstream market. In my twenties, sore feet weren’t as much of an issue, but after over 15 years of working jobs that require a lot of standing and walking, most of which had a high heel requirement, my feet are constantly feeling strained. Even with diligently tending to them and using the best orthotics/insoles, they still get intermittent plantar fasciitis and various aches. In comes recovery footwear and it has been a game changer.

Oofos Review

Women's oofo original slide
Oofos Recovery Slide. Comes in several colors.

Recovery footwear is notable for having a rocker-shaped sole and bouncy yet supportive footbeds. The first brand I had ever heard of making these Oofos Recovery Slides was Oofos. Still, Hoka has become a popular choice with its extra plush soles. Other outdoor brands, such as Columbia, have begun making their versions. Oofos has expanded its line since I started wearing them over a year ago. The slides (Ooah) and original thong sandals (Ooriginal) are still my favorites.

Oofos has perfected the density and anatomical footbed to comfortably support aching feet and provide stabilization. They are what I put on after every hike and workout because they alleviate the soreness. This helps me keep from overpronation when I’m tired. This, subsequently, helps save my ankles from more strain, keeping those careless injuries at bay. They have been great for day-to-day use, as well. I often wake up with sore and stiff feet and ankles from all the past injuries. Now I can pop these on and walk without that initial morning/middle of the night hobble. It’s amazing to be able to get up and walk immediately pain-free.

Cons

My only issue with them is sizing. If you’re between sizes you may find sizing down is a bit too snug, while sizing up creates some fit issues. I have found that with the Oofos Recovery Slide, wearing socks can alleviate the pinch of smaller shoes and help the larger ones fit a little more snugly. With the thong-type sandals, however, I find that sizing up is the best route.

Final Thoughts

For those with foot issues or just recovering after long runs or hikes, Oofos Recovery Slide will be your new best friend and avenue to happy, pain-free feet.
